In a few days, Memorial Day will be upon us.  Even though it has felt like summer for a few weeks here in Orlando, the Memorial Day weekend is the official start of summer.  The three day Memorial Day weekend is a great time to spend some quality time with your pet, but there are a few precautions you need to take to avoid a possible unplanned trip to the emergency vet this weekend.

• Hydration:  Be sure that you always have plenty of fresh water for your pet whether you are going to the beach, the pool or simply enjoying a park with your best friend.  Dogs can get dehydrated very quickly in the warm weather in Florida and ponds, streams and lakes could contain parasites.
• Insect Repellent:  As much as you want to protect your pet from insects, skip putting repellent on them.  Insect repellent was made for humans, not your pets.
• Table Scraps:  I know it i hard to resist giving your cute dog a scrap from the grill when cooking, but those scraps can cause an upset stomach
• Lakes and Pools:  Don’t leave your pet unsupervised around lakes, ponds or pools.  It goes without saying that we have plenty of alligators in our lakes and ponds, and they consider a canine to be a nice delicacy.  Many folks swim with their dogs in pools, just make sure  you are supervising them as you would a child.  When you’re done in the pool, it is always best to rinse the chlorine out of their fur.
• Fire Works:  Many pets are scared of fireworks so be sure that your pet is in a secure place.  A thundershirt can help with their anxiety as well as turning on the TV or another sounds device to try to drown out the fireworks.  DO NOT leave your dog in the backyard when fireworks are going off.  If scared enough, they will be tempted to flee either over the fence, under the fence or through the fence.  Also, be sure that all your pets have a collar with your name and phone number on it, even if they are microchipped.  Remember, many vets will be closed this weekend so even if your dog is  microchipped, it could be Tuesday before their is a vet available to scan your pet.

If you follow these simple rules, you and your best friend(s) will have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

As we have all heard by now, there was a devastating F5 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma on Monday, May 20.  I cannot comprehend having my house flattened, my community gone and my pets missing.  What a horror it must have been to those who were at work to know a tornado is headed towards your community, but knowing there was no way you could get home in time to protect your beloved pets.  Obviously many pets were displaced during this tragedy.  VetStreet has compiled the information.

Donate Money, Food and Supplies

Search Dog Foundation: Based in California, this group is going into dangerous places to help rescue victims in Oklahoma. You can make a donation on its website.

Oklahoma City Animal Shelter: If you would like to donate for the animals, contact Cathryn English with the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter. It needs food, blankets, and towels right now, but it is best to call and ask first. Call (405) 297-3100 or (405) 297-3088.

Pet Food Pantry of Oklahoma City: This nonprofit is accepting food donations and offering dog food, cat food, leashes, collars, food bowls and other supplies to those in need. Call (405) 664-2858.

Central Oklahoma Humane Society is in need of towels, paper towels, gloves and food for volunteers. Donations can be dropped off at either 5420 N. Classen Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK, or 2905 70th St. NW, Oklahoma City, OK. Visit its website to make a donation to its disaster relief fund.

Lost and Found Pets

Animal Resource Center: If you find displaced animals, you can take them to the Animal Resource Center at 7949 S. I-35 Service Road, Oklahoma City, OK, 73149. The center is posting information on the pets it is caring for on its Facebook page. It is also offering displaced people shelter for the night. Call (405) 604-2892.

Annie’s Ruff House is taking in dogs displaced by the storm. It’s located at 1043 N. University Blvd., Norman, OK. Call (405) 310-3084.

The Edmond Sun Found Pets: The local newspaper is posting descriptions of animals who have been found and are seeking their owners.

OKC Lost Pets: This website was set up specifically to respond to this disaster. It is a virtual bulletin board for those who have lost or found pets.

Moore Oklahoma Tornado Lost and Found Animals: Nearly 4,000 people are following this Facebook page, where you can post about lost and found pets.

McClain County Animal Response Team is posting information on lost and found animals on its Facebook page. Contact Donnell Weatherall at (405) 301-7904 for animal rescuing and sheltering.

Oklahoma Animal Lost and Found Tornado Group is a Facebook group for sharing information on lost and found pets.

Resource for Displaced Horses: Yvette Fees has offered to take in displaced horses; She lives in the Moore area but was not impacted by the tornado. She has a trailer and can assist in transporting horses to her property. She can be reached at (405) 589-0883 or at yvettefees@aol.com.

1 Day Ranch: The owner of this rescue is headed to Moore and says it can help with dogs, horses and other small livestock. It also has some first aid items for animals who’ve sustained injuries, and can help with transport if needed. Please contact Maeghan at (405) 226-1946 if you need any help.

Wildlife Ambassadors is offering temporary shelter for exotic animals (birds, ferrets, reptiles) at their USDA licensed facility. Call 405-426-5642 or 405-863-7614.

Veterinarian Triage Areas and Clinics

Penn South Pet Clinic is a veterinary clinic that’s taking in lost pets.

As of Monday, Home Depot in Moore has veterinarians on site working to care for animals injured during the tornado. The store’s address is 650 19th St. SW, Moore, OK, 73160.

Yappy Hour at Eternal Tap

Eternal Tap is hosting a fundraiser on behalf of Harbor House of Central Florida! There will be a $5 entry fee with all the proceeds going to Harbor House of Central Florida. Guests are welcome and encouraged to bring their pets!

There will be a Pet Photo Contest where guests will have photos taken of their pets, the pictures will be posted on our Facebook page for two weeks and the one with the most “likes” will receive a $50 gift certificate to Eternal Tap. There will also be a raffle. Tickets for this will be 1 for $3, 2 for $5, 5 for $10 and 12 for $20.

There will be different raffle prizes in baskets in which guests can choose the one they want by dropping their tickets in a jar in front of them and the tickets will be selected at random at the end of the night. The baskets will include different items that are donated to us for the event, whether that comes from our beer and liquor reps, pet stores or animal clinics.

We would also like for a volunteer list to be posted for guests to sign up to volunteer at the Harbor House whether that be in the survivor or pet shelters. Guests are also encouraged to bring non-monetary donations – there will be a Paws for Peace Wishlist Harbor House has provided to us posted on the event page.

Ideally we would like for people to get involved by offering discounts on services, food, pet items, etc. to their animal clinics or pet stores – these will be distributed throughout the raffle prize baskets. It would be best for donors to attend not only to show their support but also advertise for their own businesses to help stimulate our local economy.
